Internship Program Overview​

All business majors at Menlo College are required to complete a 6-unit internship during their senior year. Business students can complete internships in the following general areas: finance, accounting, marketing, human resource management, sports management, international management, entrepreneurship, real estate and general management. Psychology majors are also strongly encouraged to complete a for-credit internship before they graduate. Below are the timelines and program requirements for required and elective internships. Specific internship dates each semester align with the internship seminar that all students must attend while completing their field experience.

The Menlo College Internship program is designed to help you apply the knowledge and skills you have gained in your courses to professional settings throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent. — National Association of Colleges and Employers

As an intern, you will participate in an internship seminar that will allow you to integrate classroom learning with your field experience and develop key leadership skills, including goal setting, organizational analysis and analyzing the external environment in which your internship organization operates.

Internships are becoming an increasingly important component of the undergraduate experience. According to a 2012 study conducted by the Chronicle of Higher Education, “Internships came back as the most important thing that employers look for when evaluating a recent college graduate.” In addition, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) conducted research in 2012 that revealed “…a strong positive relationship between a student having an internship and an increased probability of receiving a full-time job offer while searching for a job prior to graduation.” Menlo College’s graduation requirements ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate in up to two academic internships during their time at Menlo.

One of the advantages of Menlo’s Internship Program is that the quality of the internship experience is monitored at all stages of the internship process. All internship opportunities are vetted to meet the National Association of Colleges and Employer’s criteria for a quality internship. An internship program staff member conducts a site visit with each organization as part of the approval process, and internships are supervised by a faculty member.

Preparing for Your Internship

Although the internship placement process takes place during the junior year, you should begin preparing for your internship when you start your Menlo career. Here are some points to consider as you plan:

Internship Placement Process

Internships must be secured and approved the semester prior to registering for an academic internship. Although the Internship program will provide resources and guidance for seeking an internship, YOU are responsible for securing your internship. The internship search process is designed to prepare you for the job search process when you graduate. Below are the general steps involved in securing an internship:

  1. Attend a mandatory information meeting the semester prior to your planned internship.
  2. Schedule an appointment to meet with the associate director or director of internships to discuss your internship plans.
  3. Submit a resume for review and approval to the Internship program office.
  4. Submit a cover letter for review to either the Internship program office or The Writing Center.
  5. Schedule an appointment for a mock interview with the oral communications tutor in The Writing Center.
  6. Contact organizations and apply for internship opportunities. Follow up with internship contacts on a regular basis.
  7. Participate in interviews, and send a thank you follow up note to interviewers within 24 hours.
  8. Upon receiving an offer, submit the internship description and supervisor’s contact information to the Internship program office for approval.
  9. Submit the Internship Registration and Internship Learning Agreement forms to the Internship program office by the appropriate deadlines.

Approving an Internship

Menlo College is developing internship partnerships with organizations around the San Francisco Bay Area. You are welcome to seek internship opportunities that have not been pre-approved by Menlo College; however, all internships will need to meet the criteria outlined below and be approved by an Internship program team member prior to registration.

About the Internship Seminar

The internship seminar meets weekly during the summer and bi-monthly during fall and spring semesters. The seminar will meet in the evenings to accommodate internship work schedules.

As part of the internship, you will create a Learning Plan that will help you gain knowledge and skills specific to your major, interests and internship organization. As a participant in the internship seminar, you will gain knowledge and skills that are valuable to leaders in any organizational setting. At the end of the internship experience, interns will be able to:
