Learn about our students’ experiences with internships at Menlo.

Business majors are required to take an internship in the business sector while completing the academic elements of the curriculum. Menlo College is perfectly situated in Silicon Valley to take advantage of such workplace experiences, and we are making connections with local companies in a variety of industries, including high-tech firms and emerging Silicon Valley start-ups.

We strongly recommend psychology students take advantage of internships as well, getting experience with local schools, non-profit organizations or human services agencies.

Anthony Bernard ‘13

Anthony Bernard ’13-

Stepping Up
Entering Menlo College, Anthony was unsure about where his career would take him, but he did know he wanted a business career. After taking the Introduction to Accounting class with Professor Little, Anthony decided to major in Accounting. Professor Little had widened his knowledge of the different opportunities an accounting career offers.

Leadership on Campus
Over the past four years, Anthony has been a leader and participant in many clubs and organizations, on and off campus.  He has been president of the Ski and Snowboard Club, Beta Alpha Psi, and the Accounting Club.  Continuing his service to the Menlo College community, Anthony has also been an Orientation Leader for the incoming freshman class, and he received a scholarship to attend the LeaderShape Institute his sophomore year. Anthony believes that each club and organization in which he has taken part has taught him how to better communicate with others on a professional level. He has also realized the importance of his resources at Menlo.

From the Classroom to the Job
Anthony’s close connections to his professors allowed him to learn the essential skills needed to compete on a Big 4 and regional level.  As a hopeful Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Anthony received the CalCPA Award at a local chapter event and networked with professionals in the field which ultimately lead to attaining an internship at Ernst and Young.  After completing his internship this past summer, Anthony now has a secured full time position at Ernst and Young upon graduating Menlo College.

“Menlo’s preparation for an accounting major is exceptional. Each and every professor has had real life experience as an industry professional and they successfully bring that into their teaching. I feel the greatest asset I was provided by my professors was their professional network in accounting. They are willing to make introductions between individuals and students for insight and possible employment opportunities. As a senior accounting major at Menlo College, I now have secured a full-time position at Ernst and Young a year ahead of my graduation because of my internship and the relationships I have built with my professors and my growing network.”

Katrina Smith ’13 –

Stepping Up
Entering college, Katrina Smith didn’t have a specific career in mind. “But I knew it would be something I wanted to do, more than just a way to make a lot of money with a business degree.” Her experience at Menlo has reinforced this. “Every single professor has emphasized that you’re learning to be managers or accountants,” she says, “but you’ll use those skills in something you’re passionate about – you can do business everywhere.”

Katrina Smith is pursuing a Top Business School degree and becoming a campus leader.

A business management major, Katrina is president of the Menlo College Student Government Association. She oversees a large budget, deals with complex performance contracts and manages the SGA team.

Off campus, she works as a bookkeeper at Cafe Borrone, a popular family-owned Menlo Park restaurant, and babysits for two families. She volunteers for the charitable organization, Samaritan’s Purse, as a San Francisco Bay-area community relations team member for Operation Christmas Child. Working as a regional manager for OCC has become her short-term career goal.

From the Classroom to the Job
Between her leadership experience and her business school coursework, preparation to pursue her goals is tangible to Katrina. In her Human Resources Management class, for example, Professor Kathi Lovelace conducted simulations in which each student took two different points of view.

Katrina explains, “You would be a CEO with an urgent need to change the mission and goals of the company, and you had to communicate that to your employees. Then you would be one of the employees. It was so exciting that we would find ourselves talking about it after class. I am applying what I am learning right now in my student government work to my work for Operation Christmas Child.”

Unexpected Leadership
When Katrina first visited Menlo, her tour guide painted a picture of campus life and, “I could imagine myself here, working in the library, being in class, living in the dorm. But I wouldn’t have imagined myself leading SGA.”

She wouldn’t have imagined starting a brand new club either, but as a freshman, Katrina founded Venture Christian Club, a faith and service organization that holds weekly Bible studies. The first year, the club had three members. Now it has 15 registered members and about 50 who attend from time to time. Before discovering Menlo, Katrina thought she would attend a Christian college. Instead she created a space for her faith within Menlo.

Because Katrina has friends who are happy at large universities, she knows that’s possible. “If you don’t mind being in a class of 300 people or if you just want to go through the motions and not be held accountable, a large school may be for you.”

But Katrina values the opportunities possible at a top business school of Menlo’s size. “There are so many leadership opportunities – you really get to step up. There are opportunities for everyone to be involved.” Involvement, she has seen, engages students on campus and prepares them for career success.

The best thing about Menlo, Katrina says, “…is the personal attention from faculty. I don’t know one student who struggled that wasn’t approached with help, or who didn’t improve their grades with that professor’s help. You’re never forgotten.”

Internship at San Francisco Start-up
“When I came to Menlo, I knew I wanted to study business, but I wasn’t sure which area. A class field trip to a local advertising agency made me realize that I wanted to work in a creative environment where I could market and sell products or services,” says Kyle.

Leadership and Menlo Involvement
Menlo provides students with the ability and confidence to step up and lead in athletics, clubs and in the classroom, and Kyle has taken advantage of all that Menlo has to offer. Kyle is a defensive back on the Menlo College football team, the Vice President of Fellowship for Christian Athletes and the vice president of the Marketing Club. Each environment has allowed him to learn and practice leadership skills.

From the Classroom to the Job
“Taking marketing classes, such as Consumer Behavior and Advertising, allowed me to focus in on my career in marketing,” said Kyle. Working with the advisor in Career Services, Kyle perfected his resume and cover letter, learned to search for internships and jobs openings and to interview with success. Kyle began his internship at a start-up in San Francisco in Spring of his junior year. His internship is with the sales department of a consumer-to-consumer Internet marketing service. Kyle reports he is enjoying his internship and may stay with the company over the summer.

Kyle summarized the value he has received at Menlo, saying, “Learning at a smaller school rather than a large university has actually provided me with a competitive edge. Menlo’s small size allows for plenty of one-on-one help from professors and advisors to learn specific and useful business strategies. They’ve given me the skills I needed to succeed after graduation.”

Woman in Finance
Emily grew up on her family’s farm in Northern California. A valedictorian at her high school, Emily was one of Menlo’s first students to be awarded a full valedictorian scholarship in 2008. She originally came to Menlo to play softball, but preferred to focus on academics.

Leadership and Menlo Involvement
Emily managed the Student Union in her junior and senior year, where she helped triple the programming with her crew of six students, creating a space on campus where everyone felt welcomed. She also helped her fellow students by tutoring them through the Academic Success Center. She was one of the few female members in the Finance Club, and held the position of Treasurer in 2012.

From the Classroom to Internship to the Job
Emily relished her time in the classroom and excelled in her finance classes. Her hard work gave her a spot on the dean’s list every semester of the four years she was at Menlo College. When it came time to complete an internship, she successfully secured a coveted internship at Fisher Investments, a wealth management company. At the completion of her internship, she was offered a job following graduation as a Junior Associate, and is happily working there today.

Emily was awarded the Board of Trustees Award at graduation. This award is given to the graduating senior who truly embodies the mission of Menlo College through demonstration of outstanding scholarship, leadership and service. This is the highest honor that a student can receive at Menlo College.

Discovering LeadershipWhen Jessie first arrived on campus from Los Angeles, she wasn’t convinced she had made the right decision, but a conversation she had on the first day of orientation with Menlo’s College President, Jim Kelly, changed her mind. “I remember he encouraged me to not only stay, but to get involved by running for Freshman Class President,” Jessie said. I took his advice and won the election. “I am now confident that I made the right decision to attend Menlo,” Jessie reports.

Leadership On-Campus
After serving her term as Freshman Class President, Jessie took advantage of other leadership opportunities, including serving as the External Relations Coordinator for the Menlo College Student Government Association (MCSGA), being a member of the Allocation Board and a Student Ambassador. She was also a member of our first Competitive Cheer Squad bringing spirit to our athletic games.

From the Classroom to the Job
Jessie is a business management major with a focus in Human Resources. This has allowed her to combine her two interests of business and psychology. She recently started a human resources internship with Pendleton, a fashion retailer. The manager has taken her under his wing, and she has the opportunity to learn what goes on behind the scenes, train new employees and travel to other stores. Jessie reports, “I’m very excited by this opportunity and look forward to learning more about human resources.”  Jessie used her connections at Pendleton to bring work appropriate fashions to our annual Leadership Day fashion show.

“What I like best about Menlo is the access to professors and professional staff. If I have a question or need help, it’s easy for me to get an answer quickly,” said Jessie. “You don’t necessarily get that on a larger campus.”

International Management
As a freshman, Vicky didn’t have a specific career in mind; however, her high school lessons in business management, team work and culture inspired her to pursue a business degree. Having been born in Germany and raised in various countries, such as England and Luxembourg, Vicky has always been interested in the differences between cultures. She believes that, “In order to be successful, you must look at the broader picture and not confine yourself to just one business culture.” Her ethnic background and cultural experiences led her to declare an International Management major.

From the Classroom to the Job
Between her marketing internship at E2open in Foster City, and her job as a Web Marketing Assistant in Menlo College, Vicky acknowledges that she applies lessons from the classes she took to excel in her work. She explains how her International Management class, for example, taught her about different cultures, and how to navigate cultural stereotypes.

She says that it is very important to have an overall understanding and acceptance of different cultures, especially in today’s global workplace.

The reason Vicky chose Menlo College was because of its small size. She feels that she would be lost in a large university and would rather study in a “community” environment. She loves that professors know her by name, and are always willing to help. The small school atmosphere has given her the confidence she needs to be successful in the workplace.

From Football to Marketing
Originally from Hawai’i, Jordan came to Menlo College to be a member of our football team. When he entered Menlo, he was an undeclared major, but soon discovered that Marketing was the best fit for his interests and skills. Courses in internet marketing, consumer behavior and marketing strategy have led him to set his sights on a career in Marketing.

Leadership on Campus
Taking full advantage of the opportunities offered on campus, Jordan became a student leader early in his college career. In his sophomore year, he was selected to be one of our Resident Assistants. Each year he has re-applied and been selected to continue taking on new challenges, guiding our new students and creating a safe and welcoming environment. Jordan is also an active member of the Volleyball Club and Hawai’i Club.

From the Classroom to the Job
To help pay for school while balancing a busy schedule, Jordan took a part-time position at a local hotel. During the course of doing his job one day, he had the opportunity to meet Douglas Conant, former CEO and President of Campbell Soup Company. They struck up a conversation and Mr. Conant agreed to an informational interview. Using interviewing skills he had learned in the classroom, and by using resources from Career Services, Jordan was able to learn about Mr. Conant’s career and receive valuable advice. The interview led to a second informational interview at Del Monte Foods. These two informational interviews allowed Jordan to gain a better understanding of the interview process, and gave him the confidence to pursue and obtain a marketing internship at Oracle.

“The small classroom setting has allowed me to become close to my professors, and learn the basics of marketing. I’ve learned to apply everything that I’ve learned to real-life situations,” Jordan shared with us.  He believes Menlo’s small community has given him all the tools necessary to succeed.

Stepping Up
Entering Menlo College, Samantha Tongo was unsure about where her career would take her, but she did know she wanted a business degree. Since she came from the Philippines, International Management seemed like a good choice. However, as she took classes such as Consumer Behavior and Strategic Marketing Management, the pull towards the creative side of marketing made her decide to change her major to Marketing.

Leadership on Campus

Over the past three years, Samantha has participated fully in campus activities, including being an ambassador for Enrollment Management, a Peer Tutor in both the Tutor Lab and the Writing Center, and a Peer Advisor in Career Services. Each experience has honed her communication skills.  She is also an active participant in our Photography Club.

From the Classroom to the Job
Samantha’s love of art and film, and her growing knowledge of marketing. have led her to an internship with Fresh Takes Media Art Center, a local, non-profit organization working with youth. As a Social Media PR intern, Samantha is finding ways to enhance the organization’s online presence. “I love films and editing, so it’s a great fit,” says Samantha. “I’m able to put my marketing and social media knowledge from the classroom into practice. I also am learning more about video editing.”

“I come from an environment where family and support are important for me to succeed. Because Menlo College is a small school, I am able to receive focused and personal attention from faculty, other students and staff. This allows me to learn and grow in my major without worrying about being confused and alone. The great amount of care and support from Menlo’s close-knit community helps motivate me to excel in my classes and shapes me to become the best future marketer I can be,” Samantha shared with us.

Stepping Up
Entering college, Ebony Isaac didn’t have a specific career in mind, “…but I did know I wanted to help people.” She took an interest in psychology for this exact reason, and her experience at Menlo reinforced this. “The professors at Menlo challenge and push you beyond what you think you can accomplish,” she says, “and it was what I was looking for when coming to Menlo.”

From the Classroom to the Job
Ebony’s coursework and experience here at Menlo has prepared her for the future. Ebony is currently working at East Palo Alto Tennis and Tutoring (EPATT), a local program located on the Stanford University campus. EPATT is nonprofit, academic tutoring and tennis instruction program, that serves over 100 youth. Ebony’s serves as a tutor coordinator at both, EPATT, and a similar program called, JustREAD, which teaches young children the basics of reading.

Ebony, a former participant in the EPATT program says, “I wanted to help others like me who came from low-income families and didn’t have the academic support.” Another factor which helped her decide on her internship was Dr. Hager’s Learning and Cognition Course at Menlo. She says, “Dr. Hager’s course pushed me to decide that I wanted to help others academically and help them overcome their problems.”

Ebony first arrived at Menlo as a transfer student. “I was not satisfied at my previous college. I was looking for a college where I felt comfortable.” Menlo gave Ebony everything she was looking for and more.  The friendly and helpful environment at Menlo provided the personal connection she longed for. Menlo also challenged her. “Menlo pushed me to a level I couldn’t have reached anywhere else,” she says.

Exploring His Options
Blair is a Finance major with an interest in real estate. Understanding that financial analysis is a significant component of commercial real estate, Blair chose to do his internship at Marcus & Millichap. Marcus & Millichap focuses in three areas: real estate financing, sales and market analysis.

From the Classroom to the Job
Through connections with alumni and students who had previously interned at Marcus & Millichap, Blair secured an internship for the spring semester of his senior year. Within the first few weeks of working, he was already gaining experiences that he could use in the future.

“The most important experience I have had so far is updating a proposal with current information and market analysis for a commercial property and the surrounding areas. The proposal will be used in an upcoming client meeting,” Blair reported. “Taking initiative was very important for this particular task. This is something that I can apply to any job in the future.”

Working closely with faculty and staff is a definite advantage to Menlo College. Blair has been able to gain knowledge not only from the classroom, but build skills that he is learning every day from his internship.

A Passion for Sports
Martin dreamed of coming to the US from Argentina to work in sports, and he has been able to realize his dreams. Martin is using his global background and passion for sports to follow an exciting career path.

From the Classroom to the Job
Martin completed two internships while he was a student at Menlo, both for the Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment for the ATP SAP Open Tennis Tournament. Working as the Lead Operations Intern, Martin was responsible for making sure that the stadium and players were ready for each match. An avid tennis player himself, he was able to network and make professional contacts that would lead to his career in sports.

Following graduation, Martin worked as a Website/Hospitality Intern for IMG’s WTA Bank of the West Classic, and as a Sponsor Services Intern for the ATP Masters 1000 Sony Ericsson Open. Today, Martin has an exciting job on the East Coast as a Marketing Manager for GR8 Group in Miami, Florida, which focuses on creating unique and customizable experiences for individuals and corporations with a focus around fashion, entertainment, professional sporting events and travel destinations.
