Course Reserves

Course Reserves Guidelines for Students

What are course reserves?

Course reserves are books and other print and non-print items that are required or supplemental materials for coursework. These items are either placed in a designated area within the Library and given shorter loan periods or made available to students via electronic course reserves (E-Reserves) on the web. Course reserves may include books, lecture notes, journal articles, sample tests, videos or DVDs, audio cassettes or files, and other related information to support classroom instruction.

Where are the reserve collections?

In the Library Building:
Course reserve materials are placed on special shelves behind the Circulation Desk.

E-Reserves on the Web:
Electronic Reserves (E-Reserves) offer access to electronic course materials 24 hours per day, both on and off campus. Instructors may place text files, journal articles, book chapters, bibliographies, audio or video clips, and class notes on E-Reserves (as allowed by copyright law). These pages are password-protected to restrict access to students enrolled in the course for which they are required. Please see below for password information. E-Reserves may be accessed through ROSIE, the Library Catalog, or they may be linked from an instructor's web page or course on IQ Web.

How can I tell what is on reserve for my course?

All course reserve materials are listed in ROSIE, the Library Catalog, under Course Reserves and may be searched by Course or by Professor.

If you are searching by Professor, please enter the last name (Example: Hockstra). If you cannot locate your course by professor, please search by course name or course number (Example: Operations Management or MGT 130).

Can reserve items be taken out of the Library?

Some reserve items may be taken from the Library; others must be used in the building. Reserve materials have loan periods of either 2 or 24 hours. Loan periods for most items are chosen by the instructor.

What are the fines for overdue reserve items?

Fines for 2-hour and 24-hour reserve items accumulate at $1.00 per hour. Fines accrue all days and all hours the building is open.

The Library is responsible for providing access to to reserve materials to all students. Fines are structured to encourage borrowers to return them on time. Borrowers are responsible for knowing the date and time items are due back. The staff member checking out the item will provide this information.

Can course reserve materials be renewed?

Reserve materials may not be renewed by phone, email or on the Web. Items not in demand by other students in the course may be rechecked out at the Circulation Desk.

What is the password for E-reserve materials?

Instructors choose the course password for each semester and distribute this password to students enrolled in the course. Students may also obtain it by contacting the Library Reference Desk and providing proof of enrollment in the course for which a password is requested.

When are Materials Removed from Course Reserves?

Course reserves are available until the last day of final exams, unless the instructor requests they be removed earlier.
