Course Tutoring

The Course Tutoring program located in Bowman Library is an open resource for all Menlo students to gain one-on-one support for coursework in an array of classes across the disciplines. We work with students on a variety of assignments, including homework, test or quiz review, data analysis, spreadsheets, figures and tables for presentations or papers, etc.

The Course Tutoring program is staffed by excellent peer and professional tutors who are able to tutor a range of subjects taught at Menlo College.

Students can set up appointments with tutors for in-person sessions or online tutoring sessions via Zoom.

The Course Tutoring Center is located in Bowman Library.

Make a tutoring appointment here — sign in with your Menlo account.

Trouble accessing the appointment system? The appointment system is part of your Menlo account, so if you’re logged into a different Google/Gmail account, you will need to log out of that account, so you can sign into your Menlo account. Then sign in with your Menlo email/password.

Need help with writing? Check out the Writing Center.

Drop-in Tutoring

Can I come to tutoring without an appointment?

Making an appointment ensures that there is a tutor available to work with you who is qualified to provide help with your course. For some subjects, tutors are only available by appointment.

Course tutors meet with students by appointment in locations across campus, but our home base is in Bowman Library. You’re welcome to drop by the tutoring corner at the library to ask questions and get help with assignments, or just come hang out to study or do homework.

Drop-ins will be accepted whenever tutor availability permits, but to be guaranteed a spot, and to access more available times, please make an appointment.

Study Slam

First Wednesday of every month!

Study Slam is a group-study session where students come together to complete coursework and prepare for quizzes/exams. Faculty and peer tutors are available to help with a variety of subjects.

Study Slam takes place in Bowman Library.

How can I become a peer tutor?

Are you energetic, friendly, and knowledgeable, with a passion for mentoring and supporting your peers?

Current Menlo students are eligible to apply to be peer tutors; peer tutors for Math and upper-division courses in Finance, Accounting, and Business Analytics are in particularly high demand.

Students hired for the position of peer tutor have the opportunity to set up a flexible appointment schedule. The position will provide an excellent opportunity to enhance critical thinking and problem solving abilities as tutors guide students in the process of analyzing and interpreting assignment content, and the experience of explaining this process will give tutors the opportunity to become excellent communicators. Through coaching, motivating, and developing the skills of fellow students, tutors will strengthen their interpersonal skills while gaining leadership experience. The responsibility of this position will allow the selected candidates to demonstrate their professionalism and work ethic.

Course Tutoring Mission Statement

The Course Tutoring program establishes an inclusive and supportive learning environment where students can build the skills and confidence that promote academic success. It connects students to academically strong, patient, and compassionate tutors with course-specific subject expertise who can support students’ mastery of course material while also serving as academic mentors. Course Tutoring builds understanding of course concepts, but also supports study skill development; it further aims to guide students in metacognitive reflection that encourages independent, student-driven learning, promotes self-efficacy, and empowers students to advocate for how they learn most effectively. The program also fosters a community of learning on campus by providing co-curricular programming, including opportunities for group learning and intellectual exploration, academic enrichment, and skills development. The goal of the Course Tutoring program is to provide a space for cooperative intellectual exploration outside the evaluative framework of the classroom, where students can confront academic challenges and take intellectual risks without fear of judgment.

Academic Support Mission Statement

The mission of student Academic Support services is to provide academic support through tutoring, promote individual academic development and exploration, and create and promote an inclusive community of learning among the diverse population of Menlo students, enriching the academic experience and promoting student success. Programming is administered through the Course Tutoring Program and the Writing Center. Academic Support forms part of Menlo College’s Strategic Plan to improve retention and graduation rates. The program also provides the opportunity for Menlo students to serve as peer tutors, developing professional competencies and building leadership skills as they teach and mentor peers.
