INSY 501: Introduction to Information Systems and Data Literacy

Unit(s): 3

While humanity navigates the current Information Era, people are increasingly required to understand and be knowledgeable about data, as well as the information systems with which the value of data is revealed. Data literacy is defined as the ability to locate and understand relevant data sources and constructs; to read, comprehend, and to organize data; to place data in context; to analyze data using various methods, tools, and techniques; to argue and/or debate using data; and, finally, to make a compelling, conclusive case for something by using data to express its value. In this course, students will develop both theoretical and applied knowledge about how and why data literacy is so crucial in an information economy, and how information systems technologies underpin data literacy.
