Menlo College Named an Opportunity College and University by the Carnegie Classification

A new Student Access and Earnings Classification recognizes institutions that foster opportunities for student success

Atherton, CA – April, 24 2025 – Menlo College has been designated as an Opportunity College and University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, recognizing Menlo as an institution that can serve as a model for how campuses can foster student success.

The Opportunity Colleges and Universities designation is part of a newly developed Student Access and Earnings Classification published this month by the Carnegie Foundation and the American Council on Education. This new classification examines the extent to which institutions foster opportunities for student success by measuring whether institutions are enrolling students reflective of the communities they serve and how the earnings of those students compare to peers in their area. In 2025, 479 institutions were identified as Opportunity Colleges and Universities, which is about 16% of all U.S. colleges and universities that are in the Student Access and Earnings Classification.

“We are proud that Menlo College is being recognized as a model institution for access and upward mobility,” said Steven Weiner, President of Menlo College. “Our mission is rooted in opening doors for students from all backgrounds and ensuring they leave Menlo with not just a degree, but the skills and support to thrive economically and professionally. This designation affirms our focus on real-world outcomes and inclusive opportunity.”

Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, Menlo College is a small, private, nonprofit institution founded in 1927 with a mission to “ignite potential and educate students to make meaningful contributions in the innovation economy.” Menlo offers undergraduate degrees in business and psychology, as well as graduate programs, including a Master of Science in Information Systems, a Master of Arts in Sport and Performance Psychology, and a newly launched Master of Science in Financial Technology. With a student body that includes many first-generation college students, Menlo emphasizes experiential learning, requiring internships as part of the curriculum to ensure students graduate career-ready. The College is also proud to be designated as both a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI).

Menlo has been classified as a Special Focus: Business institution in the 2025 Institutional Classification and was named an Opportunity College and University for its success in enrolling underrepresented students and fostering strong post-attendance earnings. These recognitions are based on publicly available data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), the U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard, and the U.S. Census Bureau.

The methodology for the new Student Access and Earnings Classification uses multidimensional groupings of the 2025 Institutional Classification to evaluate student access and earnings between similar colleges and universities.

Atherton, CA – February, 2025: Menlo College is proud to announce the successful completion of its $5 million matching campaign, a bold fundraising initiative that exceeded expectations and raised $10.7 million in just a little more than six months.

Set in motion by a transformative $5 million donation from a grateful alumnus in late May 2024, the challenge inspired trustees, alumni, and community members to rally behind the College in unprecedented ways. With a pledge to match all donations dollar for dollar through the end of 2024, the campaign motivated many donors to double or even triple their annual contributions, demonstrating a deep commitment to Menlo’s mission and future.

Key contributions included:

While many contributions were designated for scholarships and campus enhancements, the campaign also underscored the need for continued investment in Menlo’s operational sustainability. Menlo College to Launch New Developmental Women’s Wrestling Program

Menlo College to Launch New Developmental Women’s Wrestling Program

Atherton, CA – January, 2025: Menlo College is thrilled to announce the launch of a developmental Women’s Wrestling Program. This program not only expands opportunities for female student-athletes but also enriches the college’s sports culture and contributes to the growth of women’s wrestling in the community. It will provide aspiring wrestlers with top-tier training, competitive opportunities, and academic support, paving the way for success in the sport while earning a world-class education at Menlo College.

Wrestling has become one of the fastest-growing high school sports for girls in the United States. According to USA Wrestling, over 30,000 female wrestlers are participating at the high school level nationwide, a dramatic increase from just a decade ago. Despite this growth, opportunities at the collegiate level remain limited, leaving many talented athletes needing pathways to continue their careers.

“At Menlo, we are unwavering in our commitment to providing opportunities for student-athletes to continue their competitive careers while pursuing an excellent education,” said Keith Spataro, Vice President for Athletics at Menlo College. “The introduction of a developmental women’s wrestling program bridges the gap for female wrestlers, offering them the resources and support they need to succeed at the next level. We established men’s wrestling as a developmental sport two years ago, and the resounding success of that program has set a strong precedent for this new initiative.”

“We’ve seen the immense impact a well-structured developmental program can have,” Spataro added. “Our program will empower female athletes, enhance their competitive edge, and contribute to the long-term stability of the sport in California and beyond. Menlo College, with its unique position, is ready to meet the needs of these student-athletes. By providing a developmental program, we’re not just strengthening women athletes but also playing a significant role in the growth and future of women’s wrestling. Menlo’s new women’s program will compete for national titles alongside our men’s program in the NCWA, and we look forward to the continued success and growth of the sport.”
