Menlo College’s Bowman Library Presents “Untitled” (L.A.) by Felix Gonzalez-Torres on Loan; Public Viewing Through January 2026

Atherton, CA – 10/06/2025– Menlo College is honored to currently have on display a work by internationally recognized artist Felix González-Torres. His candy “spill” work “Untitled” (L.A.) of 1991 is installed in the Bowman Library through January 31, 2026. This iconic work is jointly owned by Art Bridges and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, which have generously loaned the work to Menlo College. On 18 October 2025, from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM, the public is encouraged to view the installation and participate in a series of activities celebrating the artwork and González-Torres. The events will take place in Bowman Library during this year’s OAKtoberFest, also on 18 October; OAKtoberFest is Menlo College’s largest annual event for students, alumni, families, and the community, featuring a day full of live music, food trucks, sports, competitions, and fun activities.

“Untitled” (L.A.) made its debut in the library during an opening celebration of the exhibit on May 7, 2025, when students, faculty, staff and community members gathered to engage with the work. In addition to the 18 October celebration of González-Torres’s “Untitled” (L.A.), other programming includes a reception and panel discussion on 3 November 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and an open mic night on 29 January 2026, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. These events allow for further engagement with the work by students (including students of the Menlo College Art Club and students in studio art and art appreciation courses), faculty and staff, and the broader community of the Bay Area.

Art Bridges describes the work in the following way.

As one of Felix González-Torres’s powerful candy-spill works, “Untitled” (L.A.) finds beauty in the everyday by transforming a bounty of green, cellophane-wrapped candies into a dazzling arrangement of color, form, and texture. Viewers are encouraged to take and taste the candy, activating the work in a way that suggests a wide range of profound meanings. The participation of each viewer creates a moment of engagement that is sensory and personal. The intimate nature and fluctuating structure of González-Torres’s candy works are often interpreted as being related to tragedy in the artist’s private life.

“Untitled” (L.A.) was created in 1991, the same year that González-Torres’s beloved partner Ross Laycock lost his life due to an AIDS-related illness. The gradual depletion and replenishment of Gonzáles-Torres’s candy-spills has been seen as metaphoric, seeming to represent the deterioration of a human body ravaged by illness. At the same time, it can also be seen as a type of immortality generated through ritual remembrance and continual recreation. However, González-Torres avoided assigning explicit interpretations to his candy works, preferring them to remain available for all to experience in a personal way.

The piece stands alongside other major works on Menlo’s 40-acre Silicon Valley campus, including Impact by Los Gatos-based sculptor David Middlebrook, a monumental outdoor sculpture combining a bronze canoe and a marble column that was commissioned by Menlo College alumnus David Irmer ’58. Impact was installed earlier this year. The College expanded its collection in recent years through initiatives like the Silicon Valley Sculpture exhibitions in 2020, 2021, and 2022. Many of the pieces from those exhibitions remain on display on the College’s campus, including works by Ruth Aizuss Migdal, Foon Sham, Antoinette Prien Schultze, Michael Kesselman, Richard Starks, Giuseppe Palumbo, Mark Knize, and Priyanka Rana. Collectively, they create lasting opportunities for reflection and connection. Other ongoing initiatives include opportunities for Menlo College professors of art and their students to exhibit their work on campus.

By placing González-Torres’ installation in the Bowman Library, a space open to all Menlo College community members and the general public, Menlo offers students and other visitors a space where art, learning, and culture intersect. The OAKtoberFest celebration and appreciation event will celebrate “Untitled” (L.A.), while also affirming Menlo’s commitment to fostering a vibrant, creative campus environment as the College looks ahead to its Centennial in 2027.

Menlo College Launches Latino Leadership Program in Celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month

Atherton, CA — September 18, 2025 —  In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Menlo College is proud to announce the launch of its new Latino Leadership Program, an initiative designed to empower student leaders, strengthen democratic institutions, and contribute to the civic health of local communities.

The program will provide Menlo students with the skills, mentorship, and opportunities they need to achieve their academic and career goals while encouraging meaningful engagement and leadership within, and for, Latino communities. While inspired by the need to expand pathways for Latino leadership, the program is open to students of all races and ethnicities who seek to develop their civic engagement and professional leadership potential.

Through a combination of planned coursework and co-curricular programming, students will engage in a wide range of activities, including field trips to cultural institutions, workshops with civic leaders, and community-based projects in the San Francisco Bay Area. Menlo College School of Business Earns AACSB Reaccreditation, Reaffirming Its Global Excellence in Business Education

Atherton, CA – July 9, 2025 — Menlo College is proud to share that its School of Business has once again earned reaccreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), a distinction held by fewer than 6% of business schools worldwide.

AACSB accreditation reflects more than just meeting global standards — it represents passion, innovation, and dedication to shaping an academic environment to prepare future business leaders to succeed and make an impact, a commitment shared by faculty, staff, students, and alumni alike.

“Earning accreditation from AACSB is a significant milestone,” said Steven A. Weiner, President of Menlo College. “It’s a powerful endorsement of the excellence of our academic programs, the dedication and expertise of our faculty, and the shared vision that drives our entire community. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who helped and contributed to this achievement.”

Dr. Mouwafac Sidaoui, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the School of Business, echoed that sentiment: “This recognition validates the purpose-driven work we do every day—preparing agile, ethical, and globally minded business leaders. We take pride in building a business school that is both relevant and exceptional in an ever-evolving global landscape. We are also deeply grateful to the members of our Board of Trustees and Dean’s Executive Advisory Council, and the dedicated faculty and staff whose guidance, expertise, and mentorship are essential to our continued success.”

The AACSB review team specifically highlighted Menlo’s student-focused learning, hands-on educational approach, and deep connections with the business world. These elements are the foundation of Menlo’s mission and reflect its core belief: that great business education combines academic rigor with real-world relevance.

Since first earning AACSB accreditation in 2014, Menlo has consistently evolved to meet the changing needs of students and the global economy. Over the last 18 months, the School of Business introduced two new graduate programs—a Master of Science in Information Systems and a Master of Science in FinTech. And Menlo recently launched an enhanced, forward-looking undergraduate B.S. in AI and Analytics.

Menlo’s renewed AACSB accreditation not only reaffirms its place among the world’s leading business schools—it also enhances the value of a Menlo degree for current students, alumni, employers, and academic partners worldwide. Monumental Sculpture Impact Installed at Menlo College

Atherton, CA – May 28, 2025 — A striking new sculpture has been installed on the Menlo College campus. Titled Impact, the piece was commissioned by Menlo alumnus and trustee David Irmer (’58, ’H22) and created by Los Gatos-based sculptor David Middlebrook. Installed outside John Arrillaga Hall, Menlo’s newest residence hall, Impact joins a growing collection of public artworks that enrich campus life and reflect the College’s deepening integration of art and education.

Commissioned in March 2023, shortly after the September 2022 opening of Arrillaga Hall, Impact was formally dedicated in a private ceremony on Friday, May 16, 2025. The event recognized the artist and donor. Taking place one day before the 97th Menlo College Commencement ceremony, the reception also honored the Menlo College Class of 2025 and their families.

Middlebrook’s Impact draws on deep historical and cultural symbolism. A canoe delicately balances atop a hand-carved Italian Carrara marble column crafted in 1519, the same year Hernán Cortés first set foot in the Americas. This balancing act evokes the fragility of early relationships between Native Americans and Europeans. Beneath, a crushed helmet and a toppled column represent the violent clash of civilizations that followed. In contrast, a pristine helmet atop the toppled column serves as a quiet testament to resilience and the enduring hope for understanding and progress.

The installation is the latest reflection of Menlo’s ongoing commitment to integrating art across its 40-acre Silicon Valley campus. Following the Silicon Valley Sculpture exhibitions held in 2020, 2021, and 2022, Menlo has continued to showcase public artworks by artists such as Ruth Aizuss Migdal, Foon Sham, Antoinette Schultze, and Priyanka Rana. Several works now remain on permanent display, enriching campus life and broadening student perspectives.

“Art provides a chance for our students to embrace the unknown, expand their worldview, and be inspired,” said Menlo College President Steven Weiner. “Impact embodies this ethos, offering a space for reflection and deeper learning.”

As Menlo College approaches its centennial in 2027, Impact represents another step in advancing the College’s mission to provide an education rooted in business and psychology, and enriched by creativity, culture, and global awareness.

Menlo Named Opportunity College and University by the Carnegie Classification

Atherton, CA – April, 24 2025 – Menlo College has been designated as an Opportunity College and University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, recognizing Menlo as an institution that can serve as a model for how campuses can foster student success.

The Opportunity Colleges and Universities designation is part of a newly developed Student Access and Earnings Classification published this month by the Carnegie Foundation and the American Council on Education. This new classification examines the extent to which institutions foster opportunities for student success by measuring whether institutions are enrolling students reflective of the communities they serve and how the earnings of those students compare to peers in their area. In 2025, 479 institutions were identified as Opportunity Colleges and Universities, which is about 16% of all U.S. colleges and universities that are in the Student Access and Earnings Classification.

“We are proud that Menlo College is being recognized as a model institution for access and upward mobility,” said Steven Weiner, President of Menlo College. “Our mission is rooted in opening doors for students from all backgrounds and ensuring they leave Menlo with not just a degree, but the skills and support to thrive economically and professionally. This designation affirms our focus on real-world outcomes and inclusive opportunity.”

Menlo has been classified as a Special Focus: Business institution in the 2025 Institutional Classification and was named an Opportunity College and University for its success in enrolling underrepresented students and fostering strong post-attendance earnings. These recognitions are based on publicly available data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), the U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard, and the U.S. Census Bureau.

The methodology for the new Student Access and Earnings Classification uses multidimensional groupings of the 2025 Institutional Classification to evaluate student access and earnings between similar colleges and universities.
