Senior Accountant

Reports to: VP Finance & Administration
Position Type: Full-time, exempt
Compensation: $75,000 to $95,000, depending upon experience
Deadline: January 31, 2025
Location: Atherton, CA – This position is an in-person position

Position Overview:

As a Senior Accountant, you are responsible for managing expenses, reconciling financial aid disbursements, maintaining fixed assets, assisting in payroll processing, and ensuring financial reporting and auditing compliance. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and possess a strong passion for accuracy and compliance.

 

Essential Functions:

Financial Reporting & Analysis:
  • Properly record financial transactions in the accounting system (Jenzabar)
  • Review and reconcile financial aid disbursement rosters and journal entries in Jenzabar
  • Maintain Fixed Assets module, including monthly depreciation, amortization, retirement, disposal and sale of assets
  • Reconcile gifts and donations with the Advancement Office
  • Assist the Payroll Accountant and act as a back-up in processing and submitting payroll
  • Update the weekly cashflow tracker
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned
Compliance & Auditing:
  • Prepare all journal entries related to the assigned tasks and reconcile the corresponding balance sheet and GL accounts
  • Monitor and reconcile Financial Aid funds, submit federal drawdowns, and coordinate with the financial aid office
  • Maintain the General Ledger accounts and perform month-end and year-end close process in Jenzabar
  • Assist with annual financial audits, 403b, and Form 990 annually
External and Internal Communications:
  • Interact with department heads, budget managers, and senior leaders regarding their accounting-related questions and needs
  • Interface with external groups – such as bank and financial representatives, audit firm, vendors, board of trustees, etc. regarding accounting, finance, and operational matters
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting; master’s preferred

Experience:

  • 5+ years as an accountant or higher
  • Advanced Excel skills (Pivot table, V-lookup, IF statements)
  • Strong communication skills to work with accounting and non-accounting stakeholders
  • Strong technology skills and interest in using technology to improve processes
  • Ability to solve problems independently and as a group
  • Comfortable with learning and using software programs
  • Non-profit accounting experience preferred
  • Higher education experience preferred
  • Jenzabar software experience is a plus
