Intensive English Program

Intensive English Program (IEP) at Menlo College

The Menlo College Intensive English Program (IEP) offers an immersive English learning experience tailored for students seeking language training before pursuing a degree in business or psychology. To apply, please visit the International Student Admissions Page.

With small class sizes of 8 to 15 students, the IEP allows for personalized attention and engagement. Students live on campus and participate in five core English courses: written communication, oral communication, reading, grammar, and academic writing, totaling 21 hours of instruction each week. Additionally, students benefit from on-campus tutoring, access to the College’s writing center, and various extracurricular activities.

As students transition from the IEP to the traditional academic program, they will have developed skills aligned with Level B2 outcomes, as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This includes understanding complex texts, engaging fluently with native speakers, and producing clear, detailed written work across a range of subjects.

The IEP stands apart from the traditional program due to its specialized curriculum and the specific Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status,” required for nonimmigrant international students. This I-20 is distinct from the one needed for the traditional program.

Sanctioned by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) as part of Menlo College’s “in good standing” accreditation, the IEP is managed by dedicated Menlo College staff and faculty, with all classes conducted on campus. Developed by Erik Bakke, Dean of International Education & Academic Success, in 2014, the IEP welcomes both degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students. Intermediate and upper-intermediate English language learners can spend one to three semesters enhancing their language skills while fully engaging with campus life at Menlo College.
