Maintaining Your F-1 Visa

To maintain your F-1 visa status, it’s essential to have the following documents:

Valid Passport
Valid F-1 Visa
I-20
Most Recent I-94
SEVIS Fee Receipt
Financial Documentation
Menlo College Acceptance Letter

F-1 visa students are required by U.S. immigration regulations to maintain full-time student status, meaning you must enroll in and complete at least 12 units of degree-applicable coursework each Fall and Spring semester.

If you are enrolled in the Intensive English Program, you must attend all class sessions. You are not required to take classes during the summer, winter, or spring break. If you need to withdraw from a course or take fewer than 12 units, speak with your academic advisor and a Designated School Official (DSO) before making any changes.

To maintain your visa status, it’s important to pass your classes and follow academic integrity guidelines—no cheating or plagiarism. Menlo College offers many resources to help you succeed, so be sure to take advantage of academic advising, library services, and tutoring centers.

Employment Options for F-1 Students

F-1 visa students in good academic standing may be eligible for on-campus employment. Before starting your job search, check your eligibility with a DSO. You can work up to 19 hours per week on campus, but you must obtain a Social Security Number before starting work.

For off-campus employment, F-1 students may qualify for:

  • Curricular Practical Training (CPT): Available before completing your degree. CPT must be authorized by Career Services and directly related to your major.
  • Optional Practical Training (OPT): Available after completing your degree. You should apply for OPT during your last semester, and the job must be related to your major.

Visit Career Services for more employment resources.

U.S. Social Security Number

To start working, you’ll need a U.S. Social Security Number. First, obtain a job offer letter from your employer or Human Resources, along with a work authorization letter from a DSO. Once you have these documents, apply for your Social Security Number at the Social Security Administration office in Redwood City. The process typically takes 2-4 weeks. You’ll need to bring the following:

  • Current I-20 and photocopy
  • Job offer letter and photocopy
  • Work authorization letter and photocopy
  • Passport
  • F-1 Visa
  • Most recent I-94 record
