Dr. Jodie Austin’s scholarship includes work in video game studies, medical history, and early modern literary studies. The courses that she teaches reflect these interests, indulging in “serious play” on themes ranging from cyborg representations to ghost stories to the plague in historical contexts. She is a firm believer in encouraging students to learn more about local knowledge/lore rather than relying solely on secondary sources for research in cultural studies and an advocate for public knowledge.
Dr. Austin graduated with a B.A. in English from UC Santa Barbara and earned her Ph.D from Brandeis University in 2014. Her doctoral dissertation examined the impact of the plague on the literary culture in 17th England.
