Rising Scholars Program

The Rising Scholars summer Math and English bridge program at Menlo College offers an immersive ten-day residential experience for incoming first-year students. This program takes place just before New Student Orientation for the fall semester, providing a unique opportunity to jumpstart your college journey.

Program Overview

As a participant in the Rising Scholars Program, you’ll arrive early and move into the residence halls, allowing you to settle in and connect with fellow students. Throughout the program, you will work closely with first-year faculty, explore campus resources, and build lasting friendships with peers.

The program emphasizes collaborative learning through problem-solving and engaging reading and writing activities, with minimal lecture content. This approach helps you refresh your quantitative reasoning, reading, and communication skills, ensuring you’re prepared to excel from day one of the semester.

Most days feature morning and afternoon classroom sessions, complemented by evening activities. Highlights include:

  • Invited guest speakers
  • Day trips to San Francisco and the San Jose Tech Museum
  • Networking events
  • Movie screenings and discussions
  • A storytelling event
  • Development of a creative research project on a topic that matters to you

Participants also have the option to earn 2 units of course credit upon successful completion of the Rising Scholars Program, which will be applied to your fall registration.

Program Dates

Friday, August 8  – Friday, August 15, 2025

Students should plan to arrive on campus and move into the residence halls on Thursday, August 7.

Students who will be living off-campus during Fall 2025 can participate in the program as commuters.

The program prepared me for Menlo by getting a head start in meeting the staff, students, and overall just adjusting to campus. Rising Scholars helped me feel more at home at Menlo campus, helped me make friends, connect with the staff and faculty, and feel ready for college.

I feel like I can say I truly met lifelong friends through the Rising Scholars program. During Thanksgiving and Winter Break, I wasn't able to go home to Mongolia because plane tickets were too expensive, but one of my friends from the program offered to bring me home and live with him and his family for the holidays. I was immediately indulged in family love. His sister is literally my sister now. They invited me back for Christmas and New Years and everyday I spent with them I was trying new things. I wasn't used to getting out of the house that often, but I went bowling for the first time, ice skating, and so many other fun things. It was truly a life-changing experience.

The Rising Scholars Program reinforces the community-oriented culture for which Menlo is recognized. With the support and guidance of faculty and students, I gained the confidence to run for Freshman Class President, igniting my passion for advocacy.
